"Chris is a naturally creative and innovatory musician with strong communicative powers. His technical prowess is considerable but is always at the service of his musical insight. Such pianists are rare ... He is a wonderful advocate for new music."
- Royal College of Music, London
Christopher Guild is a pianist from Speyside, Scotland. He is an Artist Diploma student of the Royal College of Music, London, studying under Andrew Ball.
Christopher took an MMus with Distinction from the RCM in November 2010, and a First Class BMus (Hons) in 2009. As a student he was awarded the Frank Merrick Prize 2006, the Beatrice Leight Prize 2008 and the Sarah Mundlak Memorial Prize 2009. Whilst still a pupil of St Marys Music School, Edinburgh, under Margaret Wakeford, Christopher became the youngest ever winner of the Moray Piano Competition, in 2001 aged 15.
As a soloist Christopher has performed concertos by Shostakovich and Haydn with the Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra and St Pauls Sinfonia, and has given recitals in numerous prestigious venues throughout the UK such as Steinway Hall and the Royal Academy of Arts in London. His work as a chamber musician includes World Premiers at venues such as the Cadogan Hall, and performances of the vocal quartet repertoire of Brahms and Hüber at St Johns, Smith Square. Christopher has also performed as an orchestral keyboardist with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and City of London Sinfonia, under such conductors as Vladimir Jurowski, Marin Alsop and Andreas Delfs. His television appearances include hand-doubling for the Masterclass episode of ITV Drama Midsomer Murders (aired October 2010). In 2010 Christopher was invited to become a Countess of Munster Musical Trust Recital Scheme Artist for 2011-12.
During his time as a Masters student Christopher was supported by the Musicians Benevolent Fund, Royal Caledonian Schools Trust, the Arts and Humanities Research Council and an RCM Michael Whittaker Scholarship; also, the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, Hope Scott Trust, and the Sir James Caird Travelling Scholarships Trust, whom he would like to acknowledge for their continued support in his pursuit of the Artist Diploma in 2010-11. |
