I have until recently worked as the rehearsal pianist for two North East-based choral groups, within which I also rehearsed and performed with solo singers. Works I have performed as the sole instrumental accompanist in concert with both a choral group and solo singers include the German Requiem by J. Brahms, Mass in C minor by W. A. Mozart, Gloria by A. Vivaldi, and various musicals by Gilbert and Sullivan. Works from my entirely solo performances include Scherzo in B flat minor by F. Chopin, Sonata No. 4 by A. Scriabin, Toccata from Le Tombeau de Couperin by M. Ravel, Italian Concerto by J. S. Bach, and Sonata No. 1 by A. Ginastera. In terms of qualifications, I graduated from Newcastle University with my Masters in Music specialising in classical piano performance in 2008, obtained a Distinction in my Associated Boards of the Royal Schools of Music Grade 8 Piano exam in 2000, and spent nine years training at the City of Edinburgh Music School.
I have performed numerous "background" sets at restaurants and functions in Newcastle Upon Tyne and Edinburgh, which have lasted up to three hours long and have included a wide range of classical, jazz and easy listening music, the programmes of which I have tailored from my repertoire to suit the needs of individual clients and the function in question.
I also perform on the electric keyboard in bands across the country. I frequently perform alongside Mike Heron, formerly of the 1960s folk group The Incredible String Band, often joined by members of the Trembling Bells, and joined Alessis Ark for a two-week long UK tour (with the hope of more) which included the Bush Hall in London, where I performed a short set of my own songs.
Venues in which I have played alongside Mike Heron include the Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles (with The Album Leaf, the programme including Devendra Banhart and Gilberto Gil); the Hague, Netherlands (for a music and poetry evening including works by Michel Faber, John Burnside and Alan Bissett); the Barbican Hall, London (with musicians including Robyn Hitchcock, Richard Thompson and Green Gartside, and in a separate BBC4-broadcast event Folk Brittania in 2006, which included Vashti Bunyan and Eliza Carthy); and the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London on two occasions. |
