Phil Best trained at the Royal Northern College of Music as a first study pianist with Ryszard Bakst and graduated in 1989 with 1st class honours. He has also studied with Ella Pounder, Denis Matthews, Renna Kellaway and is currently working with Bryce Morrison. At the RNCM, he won the Elizabeth Hannah Lees Scholarship and the Frederick Dawson Piano Prize. From the age of just eleven, he appeared as soloist in numerous concerto and recital performances.
Phil opted out of the competitive classical piano arena to pursue a wide diversity of interests in other styles and aspects of music. He studied singing and production and is equally at home in the studio as on stage. As well as performing, Phil teaches and coaches piano, voice, composition and production. He also composes prolifically in many different styles and genres.
His eclectic and innate musicianship combines with technical mastery to make him a musician of rare versatility and range. He champions ways of making music which embody his teaching values of fluency and natural expressiveness. |
